Welcome to the Machine

This was the official web page of the Machine (previously known as the Mean Machine, and also briefly as S.P.E.C.T.R.E.) We were a city league soccer team in the recreational division in Tallahassee, Florida, from Fall 1994 through Summer 2000. We were originally composed primarily of professors and graduate students from the Department of Political Science at Florida State University, although team attrition led to the addition of a number of other players not affiliated with the department or the university.

The team eventually ended after the Summer 2000 season. Some of our players graduated or otherwise left town, some retired due to injury or a shortage of time, and others felt that the game was no longer fun because even the recreational divison was getting too physical and too competitive (as other teams decided that they would rather win big in the bottom division than play in a tougher division where they probably belonged). A few of our players went on to play for other teams, but the team name has been retired and is no longer used.

*Note that these statistics leave out most of the seasons when Tom Brezenski was our primary goalkeeper, and was the most feared goalie in the league. The save percentage statistics also leave out most of the seasons when Scott Lamothe was out primary goalkeeper, and improved greatly from his first season (which is all that is recorded here).
