ICOW River Claims: List of Cases
The Issue Correlates of War (ICOW) project defines a river claim as explicit disagreement between official policymakers of two or more nation-states regarding sovereignty over the use of a river that is shared by their states. This page summarizes the river claims data set, and will eventually include links to a summary page describing each claim.
Ongoing Claims, 1900-2001
The following figure shows the number of ongoing river claims for each year between 1900-2001. Important context is provided by also showing the number of states in the COW interstate system during each year:
List of Claims in Each Region
This list will be completed by the end of April 2025. A link to a summary page for each claim will be added once the article introducing and summarizing the entire data set is accepted for publication.
Explanation of Table
- Basin and River(s): the basin in which the claim occurred, and the primary river(s) involved in the claim.
- Claim: ICOW claim number, dyad number, and name.
- Claimants: the challenger and target state in the claim.
- 1900-2001: the years when the claim was active, according to the latest version of the data set (which currently ends in 2001).
